Original painting- ‘The Leaning Tree’ This black-and-white acrylic painting moves further into abstraction, using high contrast and expressive texture to depict a landscape originally captured on my expired film in the Peak District. While elements such as the tractor, trailer, and central tree remain identifiable and familiar to the eye, much of the foreground dissolves into marks and layered tones, allowing the paint itself to dictate form and movement. At the centre, ‘The Leaning Tree’ becomes both anchor and focal point. Its slant introduces a subtle tension, while its branches stretch upward into the negative space, creating a sense of openness and quiet elevation. The surrounding landscape - particularly the muddy track marks - are less defined, animated through texture rather than precise detail. This gives the piece a slightly moody, contemplative atmosphere. There is stillness within the composition, yet not static. The contrast between the grounded elements (tractor and land) and the stretching branches above imply a quiet dialogue throughout. The high contrast was taken from the grainy quality of my original film photograph – echoing a soft memory. The result is a piece that feels rooted and expressive, where familiarity and abstraction meet.
