Photographic artwork - ‘Not At the Same Time’
‘Not At the Same Time’ This black-and-white photograph, taken on the same expired film, carries a strong grain that softens detail and gives the image a hazy, timeworn quality. The subject - a window structure, framing bottles, plants, and hanging lights - feels both intimate and distant, as viewed through a barrier or from another moment entirely. The composition naturally divides the image into sections, reinforcing separation, while the layered objects create depth that draws the viewer inward, yet never fully ‘allows access.’ Titled “Not at the Same Time,” the piece explores the quiet presence and absence, connection and missed opportunity. The image feels cinematic to me. A moment - like two people moving through the same space, bound by the same feelings, yet never quite aligning. It suggests a shared reality that is somehow out of sync, where timing becomes the invisible force that shapes experience. The grain of the expired film enhances this idea, making the photograph feel displaced from the present, as if it belongs to a memory, a past life, or a moment glimpsed through a portal. This distortion of time blurs the boundaries between then and now, reinforcing the title’s ambiguity. The viewer is left with a sense of something almost happening - a connection nearly made - but ultimately suspended, unresolved, and just out of reach. The hand-restored, painted frame and monochrome mount further ground nostalgia, echoing the aged aesthetic of the image itself. Together, these elements create a piece that feels cinematic and deeply reflective, capturing the subtle ache of moments that exist in parallel, but never quite meet. This is my favourite photograph I have taken.
