Photographic artwork - ‘The Boathouse’

‘The Boathouse’ This photograph of Woodchester Boathouse presents a still, reflective scene, where the structure sits quietly against the water, mirrored almost perfectly beneath it. The high contrast (which is something I love creating) emphasises the deep blacks and soft highlights, simplifying the image into bold shapes and reflections, while the surrounding trees dissolve into a textured, almost dreamlike backdrop. The use of digital photography, carefully edited to echo the aesthetic of analogue film, bridges past and present, creating an image that feels both immediate and timeless. The calm surface of the water becomes central to the composition, acting as both a literal and symbolic mirror. It suggests introspection and stillness, inviting the viewer to pause and reflect. The boathouse itself feels solitary yet grounded - a fixed point within a fluid environment. The overall atmosphere is one of tranquillity and solitude. Unlike the sense of distance or disconnection present in the other works, this piece feels resolved, almost meditative. The absence of movement, combined with the clarity of the reflection, creates a moment suspended in time - not fragmented or misaligned, but whole and undisturbed. Printed on luster fine art paper, the image gains a soft depth that enhances its tonal range, allowing the contrast to remain rich without losing detail. Framed consistently with the rest of the collection, the piece contributes to a visual language while offering a quieter, more introspective tone - a moment of stillness within a series shaped by time, memory, and perception.

This is the first print of a limited edition collection, signed & dated. This piece has been displayed with an art gallery alongside the rest of this collection.

  • Caring for Your Photographic Print

Each print is designed to be lasting, but like all photographic work, it responds to its environment. A little care in how it’s displayed will help preserve its detail, tone, and depth over time.

Light & Placement Photographic prints are sensitive to light, particularly direct sunlight, which can cause fading, yellowing, and deterioration of both ink and paper over time .To protect your piece:

    • Avoid hanging in direct sunlight or opposite windows

    • Keep away from strong artificial light (especially fluorescent lighting)

    • Choose spaces with soft, indirect light

Framing & Protection Framing plays an important role in preservation. Using UV-protective glass or acrylic can significantly reduce damage from light exposure .Acid-free mounts and backing materials are also recommended to prevent discolouration over time.

Heat & Environment Extreme or fluctuating conditions can affect the structure of the print:

    • Avoid placing work above radiators or fireplaces, where heat can accelerate deterioration

    • Keep away from kitchens and bathrooms where humidity and moisture are higher

    • Aim for a stable, moderate environment to prevent warping or ink degradation

Air & Surroundings Air quality matters more than it seems. Dust, smoke, and pollutants can settle into the surface and gradually affect the image .Keeping prints in clean, well-ventilated spaces will help maintain their clarity.

Thoughtful placement ensures the piece can be enjoyed for years to come.
